Canyon Town (Matte Painting)

Hi everyone,

Here's a still from my latest 2.5D matte painting I finished a couple of weeks ago. I added a few elements here and there for the still. I painted it in Photoshop using custom brushes and image comping. For the actual 2.5D final composite I used Maya and Aftereffects. About 70 hours to complete, give or take a few
Questions and comments are most definitely welcome.

Caverna City

Hi everyone,

Here's a piece I finished recently, which when I get a chance will convert to a 2.5D shot. I selected several textures as sources for brushes to quickly create the cavern. I went for a different feel for the cavern, a bit more rocky rather than the limestone formations that are more typical in caves and caverns. I wanted to make something a little different than my previous work, with limited hues. And I've never done a city in a cavern before The final size is 4k by 2k, and about 50 to 60 hours to complete. It was a pretty fun piece to paint.

Let me know what you guys think!

Cheers!

Erupting Cotopaxi

Hi again,

Here's my second matte painting I've finished recently. And I based it on the amazing painting by Frederick E Church, who was a Hudson River School painter. I've studied this school over the years and it has been a great influence on me. I get my hands on as much of these artists work to simply observe, and this particular piece really caught my eye. It's called Cotopaxi and it was painted back in 1862. I thought it would be cool to create a matte painting based on it and it was quite challenging to accomplish I used some artistic lisence to chage certain things, and I modernized it a bit, but definitely wanted to keep the mood of the original. I'm sure there's an example of the original online, definitely check out Frederick E. Church's work... and Albert Bierstadt.... and all the other fantastic Hudson River School painters.
Painted in Photoshop, wacom tablet and I esimate about 55- 60 hours.
C & C's are most welcome!
Cheers!

Hi everyone,

It's been a while since I've posted anything and I wanted to share a few matte paintings I finished recently. It's probably one of my favorite things to do. Not entirely sure how many hours to complete for I work on it between contracts, but if I were to estimate probably around 30-35 hours. I definitely wanted to convey a sense of peace on this image, and wanted to play with cooler and warmer tones as well. Painted in Photoshop CS 2 with a good ol' wacom tablet C & C's are most welcome!

Hello everyone here's a commissioned illustration I finished recently. I know it's a little busy but I wanted that feeling of looking up at a canopy with the pair of Ivory-bills in the middle of it all. I used some references for the birds, but unfortunately there's not much photographs available for this bird was thought to have been extinct for the past 70 years. C&C's are most welcome.

Farewell To Kong (master-n-servant)

Here's my entry for the Master and Servant challenge. From the beginning I wanted to keep the image black and white, I guess to have that classical feel to it. I wanted the characters to have a good sense of communication, so that the viewer knows there is something happening between them. I personally like to leave it to the viewer to decide what is going on, but in the end I hope this piece has an evocative feel to it.
It was a lot of fun painting it, and I can't wait for the next challenge! I'm amazed by the amount of talent within this community, please let me know what you guys think of this I love the feedback, and I learn a ton from it as well!
Thanks!
